Rejoice Always – 1 Thessalonians 5:16

2 mins read

Why is it that joy seems to elude us when we need it most? Isn’t it intriguing that, as followers of Jesus, we are not just encouraged but commanded to always rejoice? How can joy be a constant companion in a world filled with trials and tribulations?

Let’s look to scripture as we explore how joy is intricately woven into our very nature as believers. The Apostle Paul gives a very simple two-word instruction to us in his letter to the Thessalonian church:

Rejoice always.

— 1 Thessalonians 5:16 (MEV)

It’s not a suggestion or a mere recommendation; it’s a divine imperative. But why?

First and foremost, joy is not contingent upon our circumstances. It’s not about having a trouble-free life or a perpetual state of happiness. Instead, it’s about recognizing that joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). As followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit dwells within us, and joy is part of His divine nature. It’s a supernatural joy that transcends the hardships of this world.

Walking in the Spirit means aligning ourselves with God’s will, and it includes our ability to rejoice, regardless of our circumstances. When we walk in the Spirit, we tap into a wellspring of joy that flows from our relationship with God. This joy is not superficial. It’s deeply rooted in our faith, and in the character and nature of God Himself.

Gift For Everyone

Furthermore, joy is God’s will for us. It’s not something reserved for a select few. This supernatural joy is a gift available to every believer. God desires us to experience joy because it reflects His character and His love for us. When we rejoice in the midst of trials, we demonstrate our trust in God’s authority, power, and goodness.

What does it all mean? The command to “rejoice always” is not a lofty ideal but a practical reality for followers of Jesus. Joy is part of our nature as children of God, a byproduct of walking in the Spirit, and a reflection of God’s will for our lives. So, as you face the challenges of life, remember we’re not talking about an emotion. The joy of the Lord is a divine inheritance that can carry you through any circumstance.
