Seek Peace Not Strife – Romans 14:19

2 mins read

In a world where unity seems more elusive than ever, isn’t it striking how even within the Body of Christ, disagreements can sometimes overshadow our shared beliefs? It’s not something unique to our time. Paul speaks to the issue in Romans.

Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.

โ€” Romans 14:19 (NKJV)

Imagine a world where Christians stand united, not divided by nuances of doctrine or minor differences. This verse beckons us to shift our focus from what sets us apart to what binds us together โ€” the pursuit of peace and mutual growth. It’s an invitation to rise above discord and embrace a higher calling: fostering an atmosphere of harmony within the body of believers.

In a realm where theological debates can ignite passionate fervor, this verse becomes a cornerstone for making adjustments. Rather than investing energy in tearing down one another, we’re encouraged to direct our efforts towards building up. This doesn’t mean brushing aside important discussions or compromising our convictions. Rather, it’s about choosing love and understanding as our guiding principles, even when we hold differing viewpoints. Unity in Christ does not require perfect agreement.

What would happen if our energy was focused into building a culture of respect and cooperation? Imagine the possibilities: Christians supporting one another’s spiritual journeys, finding common ground in the desire for spiritual growth, and celebrating the essence of faith that unites us all.

In this verse, Paul encourages us to reframe our priorities. It’s not about discarding individual perspectives, but about valuing the bigger picture of unity. As we engage in conversations and interactions, let’s remember that peace isn’t a passive state; it requires active effort to choose compassion over argument, encouragement over criticism.

So, let’s ponder how we can embody the essence of this passage in our daily lives. How can we emphasize those common threads that promote peace and growth? How can we uplift and edify one another? In a world thirsting for harmony, our commitment to these principles can stand as a testament to the transformative power of love within the Christian community.
