God hardening Pharaoh’s heart is one of the most misread passages in Romans 9. But the Exodus account shows a clear progression: Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, then Pharaoh hardened his own heart repeatedly, and only then did God harden it (Exodus 7-9, Romans 1:24).
God is not a cruel programmer forcing people into ungodliness. He responds to what is already in our hearts.
