Dead works and good works can look identical from the outside. The difference is motivation.
Dead works are any attempt to earn favor, acceptance, or righteousness before God by your own effort. Hebrews 6:1 lists repentance from dead works as a foundation of faith. Jesus said in Matthew 7:22-23 that He will reject some people who prophesied and cast out demons in His name. Their hearts were wrong.
Believing right gets us doing right. Not the other way around.
